WILD EARTH OCEANIA FILM FESTIVAL 2024

Opening Night Gala

Please join us in the Foyer of Mercury Cinema at 6pm on the 16th of January for drinks and nibbles to kick off the Wild Earth Oceania Film Festival. The celebrations will continue through our WEOFF Film Award Ceremony followed by the screening of the Best Feature Film “The Last Koalas” commencing at 7.30pm. We will continue to enjoy the flair of the night through our after party at the West Oak Hotel (within walking distance from Mercury Cinema) from 9pm until late.​

This film session is appropriate for viewers above 15 years of age. Viewers under 15 years of age will require a guardian to be present.

AWARD WINNER: THE LAST KOALAS

The summer of 2020 was characterised by catastrophic bushfire events around Australia. On Kangaroo Island in South Australia, over 200,000 hectares was burned, including 90,000 hectares of national park. A thriving colony of 50,000 koalas called Kangaroo Island home prior to the devastating Black Summer bushfires. Now, as few as 5,000 – 10,000 koalas remain. This documentary explores the tenacity of nature and the indomitable human spirit, an camaraderie often found in Australians when facing natural disasters together. This film chronicles the incredible rescue, recovery, rehabilitation and triumphant release undertaken for each and every koala, a species which are which are held near and dear and cherished by many around the globe.

As the koala species edges closer to the threat of extinction on mainland Australia, this documentary explores the incredible rescue, recovery, rehabilitation and release effort undertaken for the surviving Kangaroo Island koalas; a colony which scientists have signalled may well be Australia’s last.
